A Pirate’s Death for Me – David Punch

The first “low light” lens I ever bought was the Canon “nifty” 50 f/1.8. And to give it a proper test, we rode one of our family favs, POTC. Armed with the 50, and shooting wide open at f1.8, I tried my best to grab all the shots that had eluded me in the past. Here’s one of the first “successful” shots from that ride. I still had to bump up the ISO to 6400 and shoot at 1/40 sec to expose it. But the capture was there.
Side note… Since then, I’ve upgraded to the 50 f/1.4. And even though I think it’s a better lens, I’m still a bit loyal to that first, plastic feeling, light weight, cheap 1.8.

I'm from New Orleans, LA. My full time job is as the Entertainment Director for the Cats Meow, a well known karaoke nightclub on Bourbon Street. As an entertainer myself, I gravitate towards creative outlets. I do graphic design, photography, I sing, and perform as a club and mobile DJ. As my photography business grows, I find myself booking more photo gigs and less DJ gigs. Which is great, because a camera bag is WAY easier to move than a trailer full of speakers and dance lights.
