Festival of the Lion King Fire Dance – David Punch

I love shooting the Festival of the Lion King. The action, the colors and the production is just fantastic. Between this show and Nemo’s, I feel like they brought a bit of Broadway to central Florida.
About the shot. This was from last year, before they moved the show to the new location. I was shooting from about halfway up the bleacher seating, handheld with a Canon 70-200 f/4, no IS. It’s the cheaper model, but it’s the lightest of the 4 versions. I find that even at f/4 this lens is pretty darn sharp. I try to abide by the rule, exposure should be at least as fast as the length you’re shooting. If I’m at 200mm, I try to make sure I’m shooting at least 1/200th. And for this one I was. ISO was 1600, and I used the center focal point. With the light changing throughout the show, I was all over the dial. But when the fire dancer stepped out, I was determined to get a keeper. This was my favorite of the bunch.

I'm from New Orleans, LA. My full time job is as the Entertainment Director for the Cats Meow, a well known karaoke nightclub on Bourbon Street. As an entertainer myself, I gravitate towards creative outlets. I do graphic design, photography, I sing, and perform as a club and mobile DJ. As my photography business grows, I find myself booking more photo gigs and less DJ gigs. Which is great, because a camera bag is WAY easier to move than a trailer full of speakers and dance lights.
