We Wants the Redhead

We wants the redhead – David Punch

Many of us use dark rides as a personal challenge to improve our skill level.  To push ourselves and our equipment to the max. Pirates gives us lots of challenges. Harsh colored lighting, dark scenes, a moving boat, etc… To overcome this difficulties, we need to compensate for each in a different way. Using higher ISO’s, fast lenses, focus techniques, and a bit of luck.

In this shot, I used them all. An ISO of 12,800, a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens, and a great denoising program to clean up the grain (Noiseware).

Shooting just as the scene came in to view, I was able to get a much wider shot (especially for a 50mm) than I normally do. I went up a stop (to f/1.8) to try and get a little more depth of field, but I think the distance helped even more.
Hope you like it,
Dave

I'm from New Orleans, LA. My full time job is as the Entertainment Director for the Cats Meow, a well known karaoke nightclub on Bourbon Street. As an entertainer myself, I gravitate towards creative outlets. I do graphic design, photography, I sing, and perform as a club and mobile DJ. As my photography business grows, I find myself booking more photo gigs and less DJ gigs. Which is great, because a camera bag is WAY easier to move than a trailer full of speakers and dance lights.
