Zoom, Zoom, Zoom! Osborne Lights ~Joanie Eddis-Koch

It can be fun to keep the shutter open as the lights at Disney move past you. It can be equally fun to keep your shutter open as YOU move past the lights. A third technique is to zoom in or out of a lighted scene at night while the camera is stationed on a tripod. This is what is happening here… The trick is to have the shutter open long enough to properly expose the main parts of the scene and then zoom out to ‘drag’ the lights with you. This technique introduces some motion to your composition and a bit of a creative oomph!

This was captured using a Nikon D4 camera. A 24-70mm lens was used and the aperture was set at f 16. Metering was set to Matrix and the ISO was set to 100. The shutter speed was set to a blistering 4 seconds which did not leave a lot of time for zooming!
